The Impact of Inflammation on Fertility
Inflammation can interfere with hormones, lead to period problems and lengthen time to conception. Think of hormones like little messengers, eager to deliver a signal via hormone receptors. Inflammation can get in the way of this communication by blocking hormone receptors.
How Does Inflammation Affect Fertility?
This roadblock in communication can prevent ovulation, impair estrogen metabolism and interfere with progesterone production. All of which lead to period problems and make it challenging to conceive and carry to term.
How do you know if you have chronic inflammation? Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple test. Inflammatory markers like CRP & thyroid antibodies can help, but they can also be normal even if chronic inflammation is present. The body sends clues that inflammation is present in the form of symptoms.
Common symptoms of chronic inflammation:
Joint pain
Eczema
Tummy Troubles
Headaches
Mood disorders
Psoriasis
These symptoms are a result of something else that is causing inflammation, a.k.a the root cause of inflammation.
Common root causes of inflammation include:
Stress
Poor diet
Poor gut health
Nutritional deficiencies
Infections or autoimmunity
Low quality or lack of sleep
Food allergies or intolerances
Mold or chemical toxicity
Insulin resistance
Too much or too little movement
Impaired detox
You have to target the underlying cause of the inflammation, not just the symptom, in order to re-establish the communication between hormones. Foods like walnuts, olive oil, salmon, turmeric and ginger are anti-inflammatory but as long as your body thinks it is under attack (d/t stress/gut health/infection etc.) these foods will only take you so far.
Do you think you are experiencing chronic inflammation? Getting to your root cause of inflammation will save you lots of time and money chasing symptoms. Working with an integrative & functional medicine provider can help you get to the bottom of your symptoms!
Nutrition is a major part of decreasing inflammation in the body as many root causes of inflammation are related to nutrient status, absorption, eating pattern, and ingredients (a.k.a nutrients) for detox. This is why I start with gut health & nutrient status. Reach out if you suspect inflammation to be a barrier to taking home a healthy baby!
