How Long Does a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) Cycle Take?

Double board certified OBGYN/REI Dr. Temeka Zore explains that by the time most patients are getting to an embryo transfer, they may have been on this journey for months and are anxious to move forward. A common question we get asked is how long the FET transfer timeline will take. The overall breakdown we tell patients is 5-6 weeks from the start of a period to embryo transfer.

  1. 2 weeks of birth control pills to quiet the ovaries and thin the lining and to help with timing

  2. 10-15 days of priming the uterine lining. This can be with a natural cycle, a modified natural cycle with letrozole or a controlled cycle using various forms of estrogen.

  3. Approximately 6 days of progesterone if transferring a blastocyst.

  4. Frozen embryo transfer (FET).

  5. The dreaded two-week-wait.

  6. Followed by beta check (beta human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) aka pregnancy blood test).
