How IVF Due Dates are Calculated
Understanding your IVF pregnancy due date can bring so much comfort and excitement.
How IVF Due Dates are Calculated
But when you're undergoing IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) or using a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET), calculating your due date isn't the same as with natural conception. The process is more precise because IVF provides exact timing for conception, allowing you to pinpoint your baby's estimated arrival more accurately.
In this guide, we'll break down everything you need to know about how IVF due dates are calculated, whether you're using fresh IVF cycles, donor eggs, donor embryos, or going through an FET (3-day or 5-day transfer). Plus, we'll share an easy way to calculate your own due date using our specialized IVF & FET Due Date Calculator!
How IVF Due Dates Differ from Natural Conception
For women who conceive naturally, the due date is typically calculated based on the first day of their last menstrual period (LMP). However, this can be tricky because ovulation doesn't always happen at the same time for everyone. On average, ovulation occurs about 14 days after the start of your cycle, but the exact timing can vary. This makes due date calculation less precise.
In IVF, things are different. Since the date of fertilization and the embryo transfer is known, doctors can give you a more accurate estimation. Whether it's a fresh transfer or a frozen embryo transfer (FET), you're working with known dates, which eliminates much of the guesswork.
How the IVF Due Date is Calculated
When calculating a due date after IVF, doctors typically use one of two methods, depending on the type of transfer:
Fresh Embryo Transfer (IVF):
In a fresh cycle, the embryo is transferred into your uterus just a few days after fertilization. If you're having a 3-day embryo transfer, that means the embryo has been growing for three days. If you're having a 5-day embryo transfer (blastocyst), it's been growing for five days.To calculate your due date, doctors count 38 weeks (or 266 days) from the day of fertilization. For example, if you had a 3-day embryo transfer, your due date would be calculated 266 days from three days before the transfer. For a 5-day embryo transfer, it's 266 days from five days before the transfer.
Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET):
In FET cycles, a previously frozen embryo is thawed and transferred into your uterus. The embryo could have been frozen on either day 3 or day 5 of development. Just like with fresh cycles, the calculation is based on the exact stage of the embryo at the time of transfer. For a 3-day FET, your due date will be calculated from the embryo's fertilization date (three days before transfer). For a 5-day FET, the due date will be based on the embryo's fertilization five days before transfer.
